Anyway I am sure that the workaround you have found is much better than the one suggested in the product knowledge base. =)
I just think it would be more correct to make a copy for both fields (REQUEST_DESC=PROBLEM_DESC, REQUEST_DESC_HTML=PROBLEM_DESC_HTML) in case you will change text area field appearance type.
