Re: Removable drive bay for vmdk backups
André,
I had planned on turning off the VM and just copying the vmdk. I'm going through the link you sent and it seems that I wouldn't need to worry about most of the items listed. I'm using ESXi 5.1 free and will only be using the drive for host backups (it'll never be presented to guests). It looks like the only extra steps I'll need to perform is the 'unmount' procedure. Does that sound right?
Also, this article talks about unmounting LUN's from a SAN from ESXi. Do you know if unmounting a single drive from an internal SATA connection on a Z77 chipset will behave the same way?
TIA!

Thanks for sharing the new workaround, digerpaji.
@VMware, this bug is now over two years old!!!! Is it ever going to be fixed?
Re: Removable drive bay for vmdk backups
Basically it should work to detach the drive and attach it the next time you represent (insert) it. Although it is possible to do this online with SAN LUNs, I'm not sure whether it is required to shutdown the host for adding/removing a local drive!?
As for copying files, I'd recommend you copy all the VM's files (i.e. configuration files along with the data files) to be able to restore the whole VM in case this is necessary. To copy the virtual disk (.vmdk) files, use the vmkfstools command.
vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/vmname/vmname.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/ds-external/vmname/vmname.vmdk -d thin
The above commands/sample will copy the virtual disk to the datastore on the external drive as a thin provisioned virtual disk (to save time and disk space). In case the VM has active snapshots, make sure you use the current snapshot .vmdk file (as shown in the .vmx file) as the source .vmdk!

PS: Just saw your added question:
Do you know if unmounting a single drive from an internal SATA connection on a Z77 chipset will behave the same way?
I can't tell you whether this will work. That's something you have to try.
Configure NAT access
Hello -- I have several XP systems running as Workstation guest, via NAT -- Is there a special way to configer the Vmware NAT access to
other computers that are connected to my router (192.168.1.1) can "remote" into the guest XP system? Thanks
Re: Removable drive bay for vmdk backups
Yup, that's what I meant. I always copy the whole VM folder (I don't do snapshots on my home rig).
For copying I was just going to browse the datastore, go to the top level folder on the left, on the right, right-click and select 'copy' on the VM folder I wanted to backup, browse the new datastore and paste it in there. If those steps don't work I'll do it via command line.
Thanks!
Re: VMWorkstation 9.02 - Install of Ubunto 12.10 Server fails
As always it depends upon what you want y with the guest - which of course is a physical compter to all intents and purposes. Of course if you paid for support you can try to to get some from VMwre tech support but I'd be somewhat dubious since it appears you may not be a corporate volume buyer (if you are that's a different question). If you want to demand tech support from the company I suspect they will ask you the for vmware.log and perhaps a large set of specs for both host and guest than yoo oou've posted here. Then you will need to perform long and painful reinstalls, downloads, reboots etc.
On the other hand if you want to do something with the Ubuntu OS that can only be done with Ubuntu 12.10 - or even that you want to use the prettier GUI then see if an 'upgrade manager -d' fits you needs. At some time the problem workarounds will be better achieved by working with the guest than the host. Because of my setup with multiple RAIDs and Windows iin a multiboot configuration for example I needed to to upgrade from 12.04 (alt install) to 12.10 and thence to 13.04. I've had no problems Not only can I reduce the number of upgrades (since its not officaily released but development is frozen)but I have more stable alternatives for VM than just WS and VB (qemu just one example among many) .
I never pay for support becuase I get more on this forum or through Google searches.
Good luck with VMware!
Re: ESXi 5.1 and Update Manager
Hi Everybody,
The question is really and very important.
When Will we have Update Manager installed in VCVA (vCenter Virtual Appliace - Linux)?
And When will we have Web Client doing updates and upgrade using UM (update Manager)
Thank You.

Re: vMotion Multi-NIC setup / network outage
Could you also double-check that you have the "Notify Switches" enabled on the vMotion VMkernel portgroup?

Re: vm workstation 9.0.2 poor performance
thanks, I think it might have improved the boot time a little bit, but the performance while the vm has booted up is still very poor imo
Re: Slow 2D Graphics in Windows 8 with Workstation 9
Hi,
the problem is solved now .
Either the new VMware Workstation version 9.0.2 or the NVIDIA version 314.22 solved this problem!
Bye,

Re: internal network with isolated link
the IP address of vm1 is in the same range of other vms. for example 192.168.80.5.

Re: Upgrading Workstation 7 - Academic Store
Yoo are right about that - I don't read those guidelines like the vast majority of us. The only imp ortant ones to me are matters of flaming, spamnng and such. So by all means lets continue with questions that involve sales (which I've found more willing to help than tech support - not a surprise to me given my experinces with large companies and even larger goverment entities. Yoo one even get discount deals like a discussion that is going on now. In fact I have gotten such a deal through the VP of international sales. Hard to reach for a single user like myself of course - but there it is. Also we can deal withi questions of the relation of Fusion with WS and Player as well which have their own forums. The moderators have become more negilent about movinig some discussions to the better forums for the question. By the nature of things all these produc overlap in complex ways. Through in sales and even licensing (which is solved except tht VMware should fix their problem with n ewer kernels for a minor problem as they hav fixed the major problems comppiling WS on newer kernels - which I applaud them for.
Many people want to do it the hard way rather than the easy way. That's OK by me.
