Hi everyone here,

 

I feel like a total noob now. I posted this message as initially I met this issue when I added another local storage and was moving VMs there - both Vyatta VMs + 1 VM with Debian had broken NICs. So I've reinstalled them. Then last Thursday I was on webex showing my friend some config when I noticed that newly installed Vyatta is in root directory so decided to move it to a subfolder. After moving and starting it NICs were renamed in the fashion I've described earlier. I told him that had this issue before. Then just for fun I moved VM back to the root of datastore and the NICs re-appeared. We both agreed that this is a bug so I started a thread here knowing that I know how to replicate the issue. BUT I CANNOT NOW. Feel so lame. Still trying to replicate it. As soon as manage to do this - will post here. Sorry guys for bothering. Feel like my clients sometimes)))

Are you logging in as a System Administrator. This is a System Admin API call.

yes, this could have happened, I'm deploying the vcops again, i unregistered all vcenters, deleted the vapp. let´s see if this would help.

 

tomorrow i will try register the vcenters again. my link to the other vcenter is down so i can´t test right now.

Are you using PowerShell v2 ?

Start the PowerShell session with

C:\> powershell -version 2

Load the View snapin and then try the Get-EventReport line again.

VMware Certified and VMware Supported are two different things.  If the product is not on the VMware HCL, you may find yourself in a situation that, if it requires you to get ahold of VMware Support for any reason, they may ask that you reach out to the vendor.

 

You may want to contact the vendor and find out what the plans are for them to get the product on the VMware HCL, as it is their responsibility.

Trying to find Number active paths per Lun

I am trying to find the number of active paths to just a single Lun, for monitoring whether I had a fiber connection go down. I keep getting boxed in a corner, because at first just using a Get-view of a host and fish around in the multipathsection. But really I want to simply test 1 Lun on all my hosts to see how many active paths each host has to it. And it appears any of the Get-ScsiXX commands you cannot specify a single lun.

 

Am I getting confused somewhere?

P2V results in Blue Screen on virtualized server

I've P2V'd many Windows 2003 Std SP2 servers without incident.  In this latest round I had six identical DL380. All running Windows 2003 Std SP2.  I've been able to virtualize all EXCEPT for ONE.  I've tried multiple options: Disabling components and drivers,  changing and keeping CPU and Memory resources the same.  I've even gone so far as to use the Cold Clone Boot CD process.  In every case I get the SAME result.  The virtualized server starts and gets to the "CTRL ALT DELETE" splash screen.  Within fifteen seconds the machine "blue screens".

 

I am at a loss here.  I have our in-house VMWare guru stumped.  I need to virtualize this server.  Installing a new VM from a template is my LAST resort.  The software installation and configuration on this box is very complicated and convoluted so I want to avoid this option.  The server is running an Oracle client and Cognos Enterprise Planner and Oracle Enterprise Management.  There is NO database on this server.

win7 64bit host and vm workstation 9 settings

I can t seem to get the host configured so the vm (server 2008) will run best in workstation.

I am interested in the VM perfoming well and the host (host os) just feeding the vm.

win7 pro 64bit, 8GB RAM, server2008(VM), W/S ver 9.

get-scsilun call performance

I'm trying to determine how many devices are attached to each host in my environment.  When I call (get-scsilun -vmhost XXX).count on a 4.1 host, it takes around 4 seconds to complete.  When I make the same call against a 5.1 host, it takes around 74 seconds.  What can I do to improve my 5.1 host calls?

As far as I know, current services are infrastructure/machine lifecycle based.  The request process explicitly uses the compute resource to allocate the reservation of the infrastructure.  There may be new services or services management components at some point but this would be nearly completely custom and very difficult using simply the designer to accomplish a non machine service lifecycle with the out of the box product.

Nothing in VMware player responds

I have had a player set up for about 8 months now.  I installed my OS (Windows7) and another program in it and all worked fine until I tried to access it today.  When I opened and activated the player, my mouse moves around in it but I click on the icons in the player and am unable to start them. A right-click does not bring up a menu as it used to either.  I was being prompted to update the software, which I had put off the last couple of times so this time I figured I would go ahead and update. The update did not solve this issue and I still am unable to access the program I had within the player.  I need to access this program.  HELP!

I have been doing some more research and I beleive that I have some sort of networking issue between my DMZ and the local network.  Once I fix that, the issue should hopefully be resolved.  Thanks for the help though!

Within fifteen seconds the machine "blue screens".

Which BSOD/error do you see?

I had a couple of P2V issues (no BSODs though) related to HP drivers/tool installed on the hardware. Did you e.g. try to disable (or set to manual start) the HP services prior to starting the conversion?

If HA is configured and enabled the "stopped" VM's are suppose to be moved when the host goes offline (if unexpected) - now I have seen this reaelly does not seem to happen as expected.

 

You should opne a case with VMware this catalog issue is something they do need to work out - and will only do it if people are opening lots of cases on it.

 

(Also keep in mind if you place a host in maint mode - even if you select the move offline vm's - you will have a window where VCD operations fail) -- As the host is "in an invalid state" while it is going into maint mode, but the catalog vm's still exist on it until the VERY last set of operations to place in maint mode.  (A major issue if you have a dense system)

 

Example:

Host A has 100 running VM's, 200 catalog VM's

When you tell the host to go to maint mode it might take an hour+ to get all the running VM's moved - during this all catalog VMs are still on this host and can not be used to instantiate new VMs...  Do you have an issue window.  (To solve we have a VCO script to place hosts in maint mode in a more cloud friendly way)

Re: Update a vDC with a running VM

Finally I found the problem. The "Update a vDC" workflow has a bug, it takes the allocated CPU and use it to set the CPU Speed. I duplicate the workflow and avoid CPU Speed Update and now it's working correctly.

 

I build a new workflow called "Update vDC cpu speed" in order to change this parameter. Anyway, you need to stop all running VMs to do this so is not so often.
